Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE), which celebrated its 50th birthday at the end of February, is gearing up to host a major world conference in three months’ time.
The World Congress on Railway Research on June 6-10, claimed to be the largest global event in its field, will focus on Reshaping our Railways Post-Pandemic.
BCRRE, Europe’s largest academic research group driving education and innovation, is a recognised expert in hydrogen-powered trains, control systems, cyber security, power systems, climate resilience, sustainable traction systems, and aerodynamics.
Its international partnerships include work to simulate new metro systems in Chinese cities with hydrogen and battery power, and to develop new traction power systems for railways in low- and middle-income countries.
Closer to home, it has worked with UK-based company Rock Rail to accelerate research into cyber security, and is constructing a rail research centre at Siemens Mobility’s new manufacturing site in Goole.
BCRRE currently has over 180 staff, and more than 6,500 international students from over 150 countries.
