More ticket gates head £30m Victoria refresh

Twenty-five extra ticket gates are to be installed at London Victoria station, to ease its acute congestion at peak times.

The £30 million programme, which starts in September, will also entail the relocation of shops and stalls that clog up the concourse, and shift the Gatwick Express ticket office to a central location to save unfamiliar customers a long walk trying to find it.

The number of ticket gates is to be increased from 86 to 111. Eight of them will be wider than normal for passengers who are disabled or who have luggage or pushchairs.

Meanwhile, the concourse area that serves Platforms 15-19 will be opened up and expanded, and a spacious access route created next to Platform 14.

The latest improvements, which are being funded by the Department for Transport, are designed to make the station less bewildering for passengers and make it easier to use the escalators to the elevated Victoria Place shopping centre.
