Troon station rebuild emerges after fire (video)

Troon station rebuild

Network Rail engineers are nearing completion of the steel structure which forms the framework of Troon station’s new platform one building in South Ayrshire.

NR is working with partners, stakeholders and the local community to redevelop the structure which is being rebuilt to current standards, to include a ticket office, waiting area, and a ‘changing places’ facility for people with disabilities and their carers.

The framework has 127 pieces of prefabricated steel extending more than 400m in length, weighing approximately nine tonnes. Engineers will next pour the concrete slab that will become the floor of the building for its next phase.

In July 17, 2021, a fire destroyed the canopies, an overhead power cable and the station’s historic platform one building which led to a temporary closure of the line, pending a review of the damage.

Network Rail with lead-contractor AMCOGiffen, is working towards completing the construction of the station building ahead of The Open golf being held in Troon in July 2024.

Louise McSmith, Network Rail’s project manager for the Troon station redevelopment said: “We are pleased with progress since the return to work following the festive break.

“We worked around the clock to erect the steel framework and with it in place, you begin to really get a sense of the scale of the new building.

“Passengers using the station have paused on their way through to take a look at the ongoing works and the reaction to see the building coming out of the ground has been really positive.”
