ScotRail has begun work on its project to provide Class 153 diesel units dedicated to carrying bicycles on West Highland Line services.
The operator has five Class 153s that will form part of a pilot scheme. The first (153370) is being converted at Brodie Engineering in Kilmarnock, where the single-car diesel multiple unit is being internally refurbished so that it will be able to carry up to 20 bikes. Custom-designed racks to accommodate the bikes are being installed, and these will also be available to stow sporting equipment and large luggage items.
The five ‘153s’ will also receive a full interior and exterior refresh, as well as having free WiFi installed. They will be fitted with at-seat power sockets and a controlled emission toilet (CET). They are due to enter traffic on the West Highland Line next year.
“This pilot is the first of its type in the UK and we’re delighted to have come up with something truly bespoke for Scotland and the West Highlands,” said ScotRail Project Manager Tom Smith.
